The Coronavirus situation has completely upended life in the San Francisco Bay Area. With a number of counties being told to stay in place, it’s no longer business as usual. In conjunction with our post from yesterday, we thought it would be good to put together a list of Coronavirus safety tips, resources, and suggestions for our customers, friends, and family. We’ll update this list as we get more information. Have any Coronavirus safety tips or suggestions? Please leave them in the comments section below.
How the Coronavirus is Spread
It is believed that the virus is spread mainly from person-to-person contact. It’s thought that it is most readily passed between people who are 6 feet away from each other. The virus is spread when respiratory droplets are released when an infected person coughs and sneezes. Infection happens when these droplets are inhaled or enter the nose or mouth.
Coronavirus Safety Tips: Protect Yourself from Coronavirus (COVID-19)
The Center for Disease Control is offering a number of practical tips for protecting yourself from Coronavirus. First, it’s good to note that there is currently no cure for the Coronavirus. The best way to protect yourself from Coronavirus is to not get exposed. Here are some tips to avoid exposure.
Clean your hands often: Washing your hands often and for at least 20 seconds is recommended. Do this every time you’ve been in a public space, have shaken hands, or after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose. (There are even more reasons here.) Need a song to help you? Use this generator. It’s too much fun!
Use hand sanitizer: When soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Be sure to thoroughly cover your entire hand with sanitizer and rub them together until they are dry. Whatever you do, don’t be that person who hoards hand sanitizer.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. It is amazing to discover how difficult it is to not touch your face. One study suggests that some of us touch our faces up to 36 times an hour.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. It’s imperative to stay away from anyone sick. If COVID-19 is spreading in your community, put some distance between yourself and anyone infected. This is especially important for those of us with compromised immunity due to chronic illness.
Coronavirus Safety Tips: Protect Others from Coronavirus (COVID-19)
A good neighbor puts the interest of others ahead of their own, so here are some tips to protect others from catching the Coronavirus from us.
Stay home unless getting medical attention: Not only does this prevent the spread of the virus, but it also helps you to get the rest you need to recover. If you are going to the doctor, call ahead so that they can prepare for your arrival. If you have a mild case of COVID-19, recovery is possible at home. Nevertheless, you should stay in touch with your doctor. Be honest about your symptoms so that you can get the best care possible.
Practice home isolation: It’s a good idea to have a ‘sick room’ in your home for any who may become infected. Also, it is unclear if animals can catch the virus. Hence, it’s best practice to limit contact with your precious pets. Have a family member or friend car for them until you are well.
Wear a face mask: Wearing a face mask prevents droplets from coughs and sneezes from traveling and infecting others.
Wash your hands often: The same precautions apply after you have been exposed to COVID-19. Thoroughly washing your hands for at least 20 seconds helps to prevent spreading the virus. Using hand sanitizer is also recommended.
Cover your cough and sneezes: This is a courteous thing to do. Like wearing a face mask, covering your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing helps to minimize exposing others.
Clean and disinfect household surfaces: Use an EPA-approved disinfectant. Be sure to regularly clean (or have cleaned) any high-touch surfaces and items like phones, remote controls, counters, tabletops, doorknobs, bathroom fixtures, toilets, keyboards, tablets, and bedside tables.
