History Of Glass Frames

Frame Types

The type of material used to construct a window frame is crucial, as it determines the window’s size, weight, durability, and thermal performance. There are five different types of window frame materials, including aluminum, composite, vinyl, fiberglass, and traditional wooden frames, each with its unique advantages.

Aluminum frames are the most widely used for residential windows because they are lightweight and sturdy. They are also low-maintenance, as aluminum does not corrode. However, aluminum frames are highly conductive, increasing a window’s U-value and potentially leading to condensation problems in colder climates. To solve this issue, aluminum frame manufacturers have developed “thermal breaks” technology to minimize condensation and heat loss.

Wood frames are considered a high-end window frame purchase due to their durability and natural aesthetic appeal. They blend in well with traditional home designs. However, they require high maintenance and special treatments to prevent warping and decay. Wood frames provide excellent thermal protection, and the thicker the wood frame, the better the heat insulation.

Vinyl frames are growing in popularity as they offer superb resistance to abrasion, corrosion, environmental pollutants, and insects like termites. They provide excellent insulating value and maintain their original color since the color is part of the material. Vinyl frames are similar to wood frames, providing strong heat insulation.

Hybrid frames, which use a combination of materials, including wood composites and fiberglass, are becoming popular. Wood frame manufacturers often use vinyl and aluminum-clad materials to reduce maintenance, while vinyl frame producers may use wood veneers to enhance the overall look. New hybrid frames aim to enhance strength, insulating value, and longevity.
