Window Preservation: 3 Ways to Extend Their Lifespan

window preservation

The ClimatePro team sees a lot of windows, a lot. Many of our customers have spent considerable time and energy on maintaining their current windows, including having professionally installed 3M window film. However, we do get asked quite often about way to maintain and extend the life of windows. Here are a few window preservation tips.

Window Preservation Tip #1: Keep Them Clean

Based on the type of windows you have, you will want to have a regular schedule for cleaning. Some suggest, for wooden windows, a mixture of water and bleach to remove mildew and stains. If you’d prefer something less caustic, try using water and a touch of pure castile soap like Dr. Bronners. This mix is also good for aluminum, fiberglass and vinyl windows. Be wary of any cleaner with harsh chemicals, like petroleum-based solutions.

It’s recommended to use soft cloth or paper towels on the interiors and exteriors. Another useful tool is a squeegee. The key to keeping windows streak-free is to dry them immediately after cleaning.

Cleaning window tracts and removing debris or insects is important as well. Not only are they unsightly but the can actually damage window tracts. Plus dead organic matter breeds and attracts bugs and mold, something you will definitely want to avoid.

Window Preservation Tip #2: Fill The Holes

Another key way to preserve your windows is to be mindful of cracks and holes. If you discover holes between the window frame and the wall that support it, what should you do? The solution may be as simple as applying caulk. Not only does it contribute to the look of your windows, caulk will prevent moisture build up and can contribute to energy efficiency.

The US Department of Energy noted that a little caulk can contribute to a 5-10% reduction of your energy bill. Imagine: you’ve installed energy saving 3M window film, which can dramatically increase your energy efficiency, and you’ve sealed up those holes? The savings can really add up!

It’s good to note: caulking may be a temporary solution for severely damaged windows. Also, manySan Francisco Bay Area homeowners don’t want the caustic smell of most commercial caulks. There are options available that are non-toxic and better for the environment. Try The Green Building Supply for a few well-priced options.

Window Preservation Tip #3: Check the Seals & Weather Stripping

Many San Francisco Bay Area homeowners have found the benefits of  applying weather stripping to their windows, in the groove of the window frame where the window slides to close or open. This can contribute to keeping moisture out and help to control interior temperature.

The simple way to extend the life of your weather stripping is to keep it clean and to replace it when it becomes worn or if it looses its adhesiveness. Like the above tips, this can generally be done by the homeowner and isn’t a labor intensive task.

Window seal, usually placed along the edges of the glass that holds the window frame in the wall, is also worthy of inspection. Checking them as part of a regular window maintenance program is essential. Not only do they keep moisture and outside air out, if left unattended and if they become damaged, they can actually cause the window to shift or even fall out.

The key to maintaining them is to check to see if there is moisture build-up, which may be a sign of small and unseen cracks or holes. Replacing them can be labor-intensive, so it’s probably best to have them professionally done.

We hope these tips are helpful to you. If you would like to see your windows contribute even more to a comfortable and bright interior, professionally installed window film is the way to go. Have questions? Feel free to ask them here.
